A new independent print magazine for women in midlife · Coming soon · join the ‘riff
Not your mother’s midlife.
For women in the middle of everything.
The kind of magazine you’ll make time for.
We’re on Substack. Behind-the-scenes of bringing a magazine to life, plus occasionally essays and subscriber-only treats.
Why Midriff
Midriff is a biannual print magazine exploring the creative, intellectual, and embodied lives of women in midlife and beyond. We expand the map of midlife, tracing the surprising ways this chapter unfolds and giving our readers both the language and the landmarks to navigate together.
We’re here to dig the stories up, polish them, and put them back in print.
The ritual
Put down your phone. Find presence. Midriff is something you hold onto and dive into. Plus, she looks great stacked on your coffee table. Tactile pleasure. No algorithm. Thank goodness.
The read
Stories, art, poetry that take this part of life seriously and humorously. The complexity, the reinvention, the questions that don’t have tidy answers. We’re in it with you.
The riff
Friendship. Community. Gatherings. Midriff is a magazine and a movement. Let’s get together (yeah yeah yeah) online and in-person to make the most of this moment in time.
Writers & Creators
Midriff is looking for essays, personal narratives, cultural criticism, poetry, photography and visual art. Pitch us something specific or add your info to our list for possible story assignments.
We pay contributors. Always.
Issue No. 1 theme: Touch.
Brand Partners
We are ready to build relationships with brands that understand and care about our over-40 reader — her taste, her intellect, and her willingness to slow down for something worth her time. If your values align with ours (less supplements and anti-aging, more wearable talismans and dopamine boosts), we’d like to hear from you.
When we document the middle, we create a new mirror. Not a reflection of who we used to be, but a portal into a new becoming.
— Midriff, Concept Statement
Founder’s Note:
Midlife isn’t a dirty word, a problem to solve, or — despite an $18 billion industry suddenly very interested in our hormones and protein intake — mostly about menopause or muscle mass.
This “second act” is one of the most transformative passages we get to move through, and it deserves to be explored. My vision is to deliver an analog ritual — coffee just how you like it, sunbeam streaming down on a slow Sunday morning, and a beloved magazine that makes you exhale and tingle, at the same time.
I’m creating Midriff for all of us. I hope you’re as excited to flip through these pages as I am.
